Kayden wandered along the familiar path home from school, her backpack bouncing with each step. Beneath the sprawling branches of the ancient oak, she heard a faint, desperate mewling. Kneeling down, she found a tiny kitten, its fur matted and eyes wide with fear.
"Oh, you poor thing," she whispered, carefully scooping the trembling creature into her arms. The kitten nestled against her, a soft purr rumbling in its little chest.
Kayden hurried down the street, her heart fluttering with a mix of excitement and anxiety. She imagined the kitten becoming a cherished member of their family, a source of joy for her mom, Lila, who had been feeling down since their move to the new town.
"I hope Mom will understand," she thought, her mind racing with how she might convince her.
Lila stood at the kitchen counter, her hands dusted with flour, when Kayden burst through the door. Her eyes widened as her daughter approached, cradling the small, furry bundle.
"Mom, look what I found!" Kayden exclaimed, her voice tinged with hope. Lila placed the dough aside, wiping her hands on a towel as she moved closer.

"Where did you find this little one?" she asked, her voice gentle.
"Under the oak tree in the park," Kayden replied. "Can we keep it, please? I think it would make us all so happy."

Kayden beamed, hugging her mom and the kitten tightly.
