Lara hurriedly tied her shoelaces, glancing around her room for anything she might have forgotten. Her heart raced as she stuffed her notebooks into her backpack, a nagging feeling tugging at her memory. She could hear her mother calling from downstairs, urging her not to be late. With a final look under her pillow, Lara shrugged and dashed out, hoping she hadn’t missed anything important.
Maya, Lara’s best friend, waved energetically from beneath the old oak tree. Ethan, always carrying his skateboard, leaned casually against the tree trunk. "Lara! Over here! Did you finish the math homework? It was so tough last night!" Lara froze mid-step, the realization hitting her like a cold splash of water.
Lara pulled her friends aside, her cheeks flushed with worry. "Guys... I totally forgot to do my homework," she whispered, eyes wide. "Seriously? Mrs. Patel is going to freak out," Ethan replied, half-amused, half-concerned. "Maybe we can help you before class starts," Maya suggested, already flipping open her notebook.
Maya and Ethan whisper explanations as Lara scribbles answers as quickly as she can. Lara tries to focus, but her hands tremble with nerves. "Don’t stress, Lara. You know most of this already," Ethan reassures her, offering a supportive grin. "Thanks, you two. I’ll never forget again," Lara promises, grateful for her friends’ help.
Mrs. Patel, the math teacher, surveys the room with a kind but serious expression. "Homework, everyone. Please place it on your desks," she instructs. Lara takes a deep breath and lays her worksheet with the rest, her heart thumping loudly in her chest.
Lara meets Maya and Ethan by the lockers, a wide smile on her face. "Crisis averted, thanks to you both," she says, her worry now replaced with gratitude. "Next time, let’s do it together at my place," Maya laughs, and together the friends walk out into the golden afternoon, ready for whatever tomorrow might bring.
