Liam stood at the edge of the playground, clutching his mother’s hand tightly. His eyes followed the bustle, but he drew closer to her side, his voice barely above a whisper. "Mama, I miss Teacher Cat. I don’t want to go to school," he murmured, his gaze flickering toward the familiar classroom from last year. His mother leaned down, wrapping him in a warm, reassuring hug and stroking his hair. She smiled softly. "You're feeling nervous, Liam. It's normal to feel that way on your first day in a new class," she whispered.
Liam and his mother stepped inside, and Teacher Shannon approached with a welcoming smile, her eyes kind behind her glasses. "Hi Liam, welcome! Come play with your friend," she encouraged, gesturing to the play corner. Liam's stomach fluttered, but a spark of excitement lit his face when he spotted Declan, his friend from last year, waving eagerly. Across the room, Alex, Connor, and Nathan gave him friendly waves, their faces bright with anticipation.
Liam settled onto the rug, choosing blocks with careful hands. Declan joined him, their laughter mixing as they constructed a grand castle, complete with turrets and a drawbridge. Teacher Shannon gathered the children around, her voice gentle and expressive as she opened a storybook. "Once, there was a brave knight who felt nervous exploring a new land," she read, her eyes twinkling. The knight felt both nervous and excited—just like Liam!
Liam and Declan dashed outside, their shoes kicking up tiny clouds of sand. They worked together to dig tunnels and mold a sandy fortress, their laughter ringing out as they buried their hands in the warm grains. Nervousness faded, replaced by the thrill of shared discovery and the joy of play. For a moment, Liam forgot all about his worries.
Liam looked up at Teacher Shannon, pride shining in his eyes. "I did it! I was nervous, but I'm happy now," he declared, his voice stronger. Teacher Shannon knelt to his eye level, her smile wide. "You were very brave, Liam. I’m so glad you’re here," she replied warmly. As Liam's mother entered, she knelt to greet him, her face full of encouragement.

Liam's steps were lighter as he recounted his day, his eyes shining with newfound confidence. "How was your day?" his mother asked, her tone gentle and curious. "Good! I played with Declan and built a castle! I'll go back tomorrow," Liam answered, a bright smile spreading across his face. The nervousness of the morning had faded, replaced by excitement for the days to come.
