Lilly sits on the edge of her bed, swinging her legs and clutching her new backpack. She looks out the window, watching as the world wakes up, her heart fluttering with both nerves and hope. Her mother peeks in, offering a reassuring smile. Mom: "Are you ready for your big day, Lilly? I know you'll make lots of friends."
Lilly clings to her mother’s hand, her eyes wide as she takes in the sea of unfamiliar faces. She watches children race across the playground, some waving to friends, others looking just as nervous as she feels. Mom kneels beside her, smoothing her hair. "Remember, everyone is here to learn and have fun, just like you," she whispers softly.
Ms. Harper, the teacher, greets each child with a warm smile as they enter. Lilly finds a seat near the window, her hands folded tightly on her desk. Other students settle in, their voices blending in a gentle hum. "Good morning, everyone! My name is Ms. Harper, and I’m so happy to see all your bright faces," she says, her eyes twinkling. Lilly feels a little braver already.
Lilly stands by the sandbox, watching a group of kids build a castle. She hesitates, then takes a deep breath and steps closer. One girl with curly hair and bright shoes smiles and waves. Sophie: "Hi! Do you want to help us dig the moat?"Lilly nods, a smile spreading across her face as she kneels beside Sophie and the others. Sand trickles through her fingers as they work together, laughter bubbling up as the castle grows.
Lilly sits next to Sophie and her new friends, unwrapping her sandwich. Ben, a shy boy with glasses, sits across from her. He glances at Lilly and offers a hesitant smile. "Do you like dinosaurs? I brought a dinosaur sticker today," he says, holding it up. Lilly grins, and soon they are all trading stickers and stories, the nervousness from earlier melting away.
Lilly spots her mother waiting near the door. She rushes over, cheeks flushed and eyes shining. Mom kneels to hug her tight. "Mom, I made new friends today! Can I go back tomorrow?" Mom laughs, brushing a strand of hair from Lilly's face as they walk hand in hand into the golden afternoon.
