Lilly sat cross-legged on the floor, her small fingers fiddling nervously as she watched the sunlight dance through the window. A gentle breeze fluttered the curtains, filling the room with the scent of fresh grass. Her favorite teddy bear, Mr. Buttons, lay nearby, his stitched smile always ready to listen.

"I wish I could stop biting my nails," she mumbled, glancing at Mr. Buttons as if expecting advice. Her nails, short and uneven, were a map of her worries and daydreams. Sunbeams caught the golden strands of her hair, making her look almost like a little fairy lost in thought.

"Lilly, sweetheart, what are you up to?" Her mother’s voice was warm, a soothing melody that always made Lilly smile. Caught mid-bite, Lilly quickly hid her hands behind her back, cheeks flushed pink. Her mother knelt beside her and gently took her hands, studying them with loving concern.
"It’s okay to feel nervous sometimes," her mother said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from Lilly's face. Lilly stared at her hands, fidgeting. "Maybe we can find something else for your hands to do—like drawing, or helping me decorate cookies?"
Lilly stood on a stool, her hands dusted with flour as she pressed cookie cutters into the dough. Laughter bubbled up as her mother playfully tapped her nose with a bit of icing. For a while, her hands forgot to wander to her mouth, busy creating stars and hearts.

"Maybe tomorrow, I’ll bite my nails a little less," she whispered into the darkness, hope blooming in her chest. The quiet hum of nighttime crickets drifted in through the window. With a small, determined smile, Lilly closed her eyes, dreaming of cookies, drawings, and a future where her fingers could rest easy.
