Bernie sat on his bed, clutching his teddy bear tightly. His heart pounded as he thought about the day ahead at school. Lockdown drills terrified him, leaving him anxious and unsure. "I don't want to go to school today," he whispered, glancing at the door where his older sister stood.
Sophia, Bernie's older sister, placed a comforting hand on his shoulder as they sat at the table. "I know you're scared, Bernie. But remember, it's just a drill to keep you safe," she reassured him gently. Their mother, busy at the stove, turned to offer a smile of encouragement.
Mrs. Thompson, Bernie's teacher, knelt beside him, noticing his anxious expression. "Bernie, I know the drills can be scary, but we practice so we know what to do," she explained softly. "Afterwards, we can talk about how it made you feel."
The children quickly and quietly huddled under their desks, the air thick with a tense silence. Bernie squeezed his eyes shut, feeling his heart race. He tried to remember Sophia's comforting words and took a deep breath, focusing on staying calm.
Mrs. Thompson gathered the students on the carpet for a brief circle time. "How did everyone feel during the drill?" she asked, encouraging them to share their experiences. Bernie raised his hand, feeling a little braver. "I was scared, but I'm glad it's just practice," he admitted, receiving nods of agreement from his classmates.
Mom listened intently as Bernie recounted his day. "Thank you for sharing, Bernie. We'll talk to the school about keeping parents informed," she promised, hugging him tightly. Sophia chimed in, "It's important we all know what's happening so you feel safe, Bernie." Together, they planned to speak with the school, ensuring better communication and support for all families.
