Pio peered out from the edge of his nest, his tiny feathers fluffed against the morning chill. Below him, the forest stretched endlessly, bathed in a hazy glow. He watched as other birds soared high above, their wings slicing through the brightening sky.
"What if I fall? What if I don't know how to do it?"
Pio watched his siblings, one by one, leap into the open sky, their joyous calls fading as they disappeared among the clouds. Their confidence left him feeling even smaller, his feet gripping the branch so tightly it trembled beneath him. Every time he edged forward, fear held him back.
"Maybe tomorrow," he whispered, shrinking away from the vastness beyond the nest.
Lella, the ladybug, smiled kindly at Pio, settling on the branch beside him. Her shell gleamed with dew, her black spots bold against the red. She looked up at him with wise, gentle eyes.
"I was scared too, you know? But I learned that you can be afraid and still try!"
Pio gazed at the sky, then at the dizzying drop below. He remembered Lella's words, her courage smaller than his yet strong enough to face the world. With a shaky breath, he closed his eyes and felt the sun warm his back.
"Maybe I can be scared and still try," he murmured, opening his wings slowly.
Pio's first flight is a wild, wobbly tumble, the air cool and exhilarating against his wings. He dips and sways, nearly losing balance, but then he steadies, laughter bubbling up as he soars. The sky is wide and welcoming, and below him, the forest cheers in silent encouragement.
"I'm flying! I'm really flying!"
Pio knows the fear hasn't vanished, but it no longer keeps him grounded. Each flap of his wings is a victory, every leap a new beginning. He smiles, grateful for the courage that carried him into the sky, and for friends like Lella who believed in him.
