Lerako tightens the strings of his worn-out school bag, glancing back at the small shack where his mother waves silently from the doorway. His stomach grumbles with hunger, but he steels himself for the journey ahead. The path is long, but hope flickers in his eyes with every step he takes toward education.
Lerako walks beside his friends, their laughter masking the exhaustion. "Do you think today we’ll finally get new books?" he asks, trying to sound hopeful. His friend shakes his head, but a smile tugs at his lips as they dream together of better days.
Lerako sits quietly, watching ants carry crumbs away. His stomach aches with emptiness, and his mind drifts to the classroom, where hunger makes it hard to concentrate. "I wish we could eat like the kids in the city," he murmurs, his words barely above a whisper.
Lerako clings to every word the teacher says, but his eyes grow heavy from sleepless nights. "Who can tell me the answer?" the teacher asks, scanning the room. Lerako tries to raise his hand, but fatigue pulls him back.
Lerako helps a younger student adjust her satchel, brushing dust from her cheeks. "Let’s stick together," he says gently, determined to protect her from dangers along the road. Despite their struggles, a sense of community binds them.
Lerako looks at his mother, her eyes tired but full of love. "One day, Mama, things will be different," he whispers, hope stubbornly blooming in his heart despite the hardships. The promise of a brighter future carries him into sleep, ready to walk the long road again tomorrow.
