Lori bends down, her big puffy hair bouncing as she giggles at Lottie's clumsy leap for the ball. She glances around, her shy smile fading as she realizes the yard is empty except for her and her puppy. The world feels peaceful, yet a little lonely, the silence interrupted only by Lottie's joyful yaps.
It was quiet until Lori hears the squeaking sound of an old bicycle. As they got closer, they notice a boy kneeling by his bicycle. He quickly gets on his feet and introduces himself. Duke quickly steadies Lori, his voice bubbling with excitement. Duke (new character): A buoyant, loquacious boy new to the neighborhood and eager to make friends. "Hey! Sorry about that. I didn't see you there—are you playing catch? Can I join?"
Lori hesitates, her shyness holding her back, but Lottie bounds over to Duke, tail wagging furiously. "Hi, Lottie! You’re so cute. I just moved here and don’t know anyone yet. What’s your favorite game?" Duke asks, his voice gentle now. "She loves to play catch. And... I guess I do too," Lori replies softly, a smile slowly forming.
"Let’s see who can throw the ball the furthest! Lottie can be our referee," Duke grins, tossing the ball gently for Lottie to chase. Lori joins in, her nerves easing as Duke encourages her and includes her in the play. The three of them run and laugh, the morning unfolding with joy.
"You know, I used to be shy too. Moving is hard. But making friends makes it easier," Duke shares, looking at Lori kindly. "I hope we can be friends. I don’t have many at school or church," Lori confides, her voice barely above a whisper. Duke smiles, nodding in understanding.
"Let’s meet again tomorrow. I have so many games to teach you and Lottie!" Duke exclaims, already planning their next adventure. Lori beams, no longer feeling alone, as Lottie barks happily between her new friends.
