Ben, a curious ten-year-old with tousled hair and wide eyes, holds the leash of his loyal golden retriever, Lil Champ. They move at an easy pace, Lil Champ's tail wagging with every step. Ben hums a little tune, peering into hedges for hidden treasures.
"Let's go a little farther today, Champ. Maybe we'll find something cool!"
Ben hesitates, glancing between two paths. Lil Champ tugs eagerly to the right.
"Alright, boy, let's see where this goes," Ben says, trusting his dog's enthusiasm. They wander down the unfamiliar street, the houses here looking different—older, with peeling paint and wild gardens.
Ben slows, uncertainty creeping into his eyes as he glances around. Lil Champ senses the change and presses close to his side.
"I...I don't remember this place, Champ. Do you know the way home?" Ben's voice trembles, but Lil Champ licks his hand reassuringly.
A stranger, tall and wearing a faded jacket, approaches with a forced smile. Lil Champ steps in front of Ben, hackles raised and eyes sharp.
Stranger: middle-aged, unshaven, with a rough voice and nervous demeanor.
"Are you lost, kid? Want me to help you find your way?"
"Grrrrr... Woof! Woof!" Lil Champ barks fiercely, planting himself between the stranger and Ben.
"No, thank you. My dog and I are okay," Ben manages, gripping Lil Champ's leash tighter as the stranger backs away, unnerved by the dog’s protective stance.
Ben starts to step forward, disoriented, but Lil Champ jerks the leash back, barking loudly and blocking Ben's path.
"Hey, what—oh!" Ben gasps as a car zooms past where he might have stepped. He kneels, hugging Lil Champ tightly.
"You saved me, Champ. Good boy," Ben whispers, gratitude shining in his eyes.
Ben recognizes the corner, relief flooding his face as their own mailbox comes into view.
"You really do know the way home, don't you, Champ?" he says, smiling through tears. They break into a run, laughter and barking echoing down the street as they finally reach their front door, safe and sound.
