Oliver, an eight-year-old boy with tousled brown hair and wide, anxious eyes, clutches the small hand of Maya, his six-year-old sister, as they stand surrounded by towering trees. Both children wear backpacks several sizes too large, their faces streaked with dirt and worry. Maya's pink jacket is bright against the sea of green, a tiny beacon in the wilderness.
"Ollie, do you think Mom can find us?"
"I don't know, Maya. But I promise, I won't let go of your hand," he says, his voice trembling but determined.
Oliver leads the way, carefully helping Maya balance as they cross the log. Birds flit above, their wings a blur in the fading light, and somewhere in the distance, a branch cracks. Each sound seems magnified, filling the children with both hope and dread.
"We should keep moving. Maybe if we find a hill, we can see where we are," Oliver suggests, trying to sound braver than he feels.
"Can we rest soon? My feet hurt," Maya whispers, tears threatening in her eyes.
Oliver rummages through his backpack, pulling out a half-eaten granola bar and offering it to his sister. Maya wipes her eyes, her small shoulders shivering as she nibbles the snack.
"Do you remember when we built a fort in the backyard? This is like that, but real," she says, a faint smile breaking through her fear.
"Yeah, except this time, we have to be extra brave," Oliver replies, wrapping his arm around her.
Maya leans her head on Oliver's shoulder, her eyelids drooping. Oliver stays alert, scanning the shadows for any sign of movement, his heart pounding with worry and hope.
"Tomorrow, we'll make a big X out of sticks. Someone might see it from above," he whispers, more to reassure himself than his sister.
"I like the stars. They make me feel safe," Maya murmurs, drifting towards sleep.
Oliver shakes Maya awake, excitement and relief flooding his face. Together, they run toward the sound, voices trembling with hope.
"We're here! Over here!"
A search party emerges from the trees, bright vests vivid against the green. A woman breaks from the group, rushing forward—their mother, her eyes brimming with tears and love.
Their mother kneels, arms wide, and both children rush into her embrace, tears of relief and happiness flowing freely. The forest, once a maze of fear, now seems gentle and alive with hope.
"I will never let you out of my sight again," she whispers, holding them tight as the morning light promises a new beginning.
