Luna, a cheerful Mexican girl with bright, determined eyes, sits on her bed lacing up her skates. She looks at the poster and smiles. "One day, that will be me skating under the big lights," she whispers, her voice full of hope.
Luna enters, her heart pounding with excitement. She clutches her old skates, feeling small among the other children. Coach Ramirez, a tall woman with a sharp whistle and kind eyes, glances over but turns away to talk to another skater. "Excuse me, may I try out for the team?" Luna asks quietly.
Coach Ramirez finally approaches, arms crossed. "You’re new here, Luna. Skating is hard work. Are you sure you’re ready for this?" Luna nods bravely, though her hands tremble. Some older skaters giggle nearby, whispering to each other.
Luna takes a deep breath and steps onto the slippery ice. She wobbles but remembers her abuela’s words: Abuela Rosa, wise and gentle, once said, "Cuando caigas, levántate más fuerte, mi niña." Luna skates forward, her braids flying behind her as she tries her very best.
Luna stumbles but keeps going, her face glowing with joy. Coach Ramirez leans in, eyes wide in surprise. "Look at her go! She never gives up," she says to the other coaches, a smile spreading across her face.
Coach Ramirez kneels beside Luna. "Would you like to join our team, Luna? We need skaters with your spirit," she asks warmly. Luna’s eyes shine as she hugs her coach and beams at her friends, knowing that her dreams are just beginning.
