Lyla sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes, puzzled by the lack of color around her. She glanced at her favorite rainbow pillow, noticing it was now only shades of gray. The world outside her window looked so different that her heart filled with worry.
"Where did all the colors go?" she whispered, clutching her tiny backpack and the magical paintbrush her grandmother had given her.
She wandered through the park, searching for any hint of brightness. She saw neighbors walking with their heads down, and even the birds looked somber. Lyla remembered her grandmother's words about colors and kindness, and a tiny hope flickered inside her.
"Maybe I can help bring the colors back," she said, gripping her magical paintbrush tighter.
Lyla approached slowly and knelt beside the boy, offering him her favorite marble from her backpack. She listened as he shared how lonely he felt and gently encouraged him to join her in a game. As they played, Lyla noticed a shimmer of blue returning to the sky.
"Look! The sky is turning blue again," she exclaimed, pointing upwards with a wide smile.
Lyla decided to tell the woman a silly joke she’d invented, hopping about and making funny faces. The woman’s laughter filled the air, warm and genuine. Suddenly, yellow sparkles danced across the bench and sunlight beamed brighter.
"See? Your laughter brought the yellow back," Lyla said, clapping her hands with delight.
She knelt beside the puppy, sharing a piece of bread from her backpack and gently stroking its fur. As she whispered kind words and promised care, a wave of green swept through the grass, fresh and vivid. The puppy wagged its tail, hope flickering in its eyes.
"You’re safe now," Lyla murmured, watching the green grow back all around them.
Lyla paused on her doorstep, gazing at her magical paintbrush. She realized that the real magic had come from her choices, not the brush. The town was alive again because she—and everyone else—had remembered to be kind, playful, and caring.
"Colors come from inside us," Lyla said softly, her heart glowing with every shade of happiness.
