Mama Cat nudged her kittens forward, her amber eyes alert as she scanned the alley for danger.
Nestled close behind her, three tiny kittens pressed together, their fur puffed against the cold.
Nearby, Mr. Lin, the Recycler, wrapped in a patched coat, rummaged through bins, his gloved hands trembling.
Mr. Lin[/@ch_2] pauses, noticing the feline family watching him from a safe distance.]
"Well, hello there, little ones," he said softly, his voice cracked with loneliness but gentle.
Mama Cat stepped forward, her tail high, as if sensing the kindness in his tone.
One of the kittens mewed plaintively, eyes wide with curiosity and hunger.
Mr. Lin[/@ch_2] kneels, pulling out an old, woolen scarf from his cart and laying it in the box. He gestures invitingly to Mama Cat and her kittens.]
"You must be freezing. Come, take this and stay close," he murmured, his breath visible in the cold air.
The kittens scampered toward the box, curling up on the scarf, while Mama Cat lingered, watching Mr. Lin with gratitude.
A faint smile flickered on Mr. Lin's face as he settled nearby, feeling less alone for the first time in weeks.
Mama Cat[/@ch_1] notices a plastic bag fluttering by, snagged on a branch above Mr. Lin's cart. She leaps gracefully, batting it down to where he can reach.]
"You're quite the helper, aren't you?" Mr. Lin chuckled, gathering the bag and tucking it with his recyclables.
The kittens, emboldened by their mother's actions, began to paw through the bins, nudging out cans and bottles.
Together, they collected more recyclables, moving as a team through the snowy alley.
Mr. Lin[/@ch_2] shares a crust of bread and a tin of sardines with his new companions. The kittens eat hungrily, purring, while Mama Cat sits beside Mr. Lin, her body pressed against his leg for warmth.]
"I never thought I'd find friends on a night like this," he whispered, his eyes glistening with emotion.
The alley, once cold and lonely, now glowed with a sense of kinship.
Snow continued to fall gently, but inside their little circle, warmth and hope grew.
Mr. Lin[/@ch_2] and his feline friends prepare to greet the day together. The kittens romp in the snow, chasing shadows, while Mama Cat purrs contentedly beside Mr. Lin.]
"We made it through the night," he said, hope brightening his voice.
Mama Cat meowed softly, as if in agreement, her tail curled around his hand.
Together, they faced the morning—no longer alone, but as a family forged in the heart of winter.
