Matty the maggot wriggled hungrily through a pile of mushy banana peels, his pale, segmented body glistening with dew. Around him, the bin buzzed with muffled city sounds and the distant caw of scavenging crows. Each movement brought a new scent—sharp vinegar from fermenting fruit, earthy notes of decaying leaves, and the cool tang of metal from the bin’s rim.
Matty looked longingly at the world above the bin, where the light danced and shadows shifted. "What’s beyond this mountain of melon rinds and eggshells?" he wondered aloud, his tiny voice trembling with a mix of fear and excitement. The other maggots were content to nibble and slither, but Matty dreamed of more.
Feeling a strange new itch, Matty crawled away from his friends, searching for a quiet corner beneath a broken eggshell. His body tingled, and he sensed something deep within him shifting, like a gentle tide pulling him toward change. "I feel... different. Am I sick, or is this what growing up feels like?" he whispered to himself, curling into a tight ball.
Matty felt his skin harden and tighten, forming a shell around his small body. Time slipped by in a blur of dreams—of soaring skies and endless space. Hidden away in his cocoon, Matty waited, trusting the process he could not see.
With a slow, determined push, Matty broke free from his shell. Where once he had been soft and wriggling, he now sported slender legs and glistening wings. "Is this really me? I feel so light, so free!" he marveled, stretching his wings for the very first time.
Matty climbed to the very edge of the bin, peering out at the world he’d always dreamed of. With a flutter and a leap of faith, he soared upward, leaving the bin and his maggot days behind. "Goodbye, old home. Hello, sky!" he called, his heart swelling with joy as he joined the dance of flies in the morning air.
