Max clutched his mother’s hand tightly, his eyes wide with a mix of curiosity and fear. The room buzzed with laughter and chatter as children explored their new surroundings. Ms. Lily, the teacher, greeted each child with a warm smile, her voice gentle and welcoming.
"Welcome, Max! We’re going to have so much fun today," she said, crouching down to his level.
Max nodded silently, his grip on his mother’s hand loosening just a bit.
Max wandered cautiously around the room, his eyes darting from the colorful toys to the other children. He paused at a table where a little girl with curly hair was building a tower of blocks.
Ella, the girl with an infectious laugh, looked up and grinned at him.
"Wanna help me build?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Max hesitated, then nodded, moving to sit beside her.
Ms. Lily clapped her hands gently, signaling the children to gather around. Max found a spot next to Ella, his heart racing with the thrill of being part of the group.
"Today, we’re going to learn about listening," Ms. Lily announced, her voice calm and engaging.
Max leaned forward, eager to soak in every word.
Max sat next to Ella, carefully pouring juice into his cup, trying not to spill. The room hummed with chatter as children shared stories and giggles.
"I like dinosaurs," Ella declared, munching on her sandwich.
"Me too!" Max replied, a shy smile spreading across his face.
As the children raced around, Max stood by the slide, watching others climb and play. He felt a tug on his arm and turned to see Ella beckoning him to join her.
"Come on! Let’s play tag," she called, her laughter infectious.
Max felt his inhibitions melt away as he joined the chase, his laughter mingling with the others'.
Max hugged his mother tightly as she arrived to pick him up. His face was flushed with excitement and joy.
"You did wonderfully today, Max," Ms. Lily said, waving goodbye.
Max waved back, already looking forward to tomorrow, knowing that he had found a place where he belonged.
