Max, clutching his mother's hand, gazed wide-eyed at the bustling scene before him. His heart pounded with a mix of excitement and nerves as he took in the sight of children laughing and playing. "Mom, will I make friends here?" he asked, his voice a soft whisper.
Max's mother smiled reassuringly and knelt down to his level. "Of course, you will, sweetheart. Just be yourself, and everything will be okay," she replied, giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze.
Mrs. Thompson, a kind-hearted teacher with a warm smile, welcomed each child as they entered. "Good morning, everyone! Find your name and take a seat," she said, gesturing to the desks.
Max found his desk and sat down quietly, glancing at the other children around him. A friendly girl with curly hair, Lily, waved at him from across the room. "Hi, I'm Lily! What's your name?" she called out cheerfully.
Mrs. Thompson clapped her hands to get their attention. "Today, we're going to make our very own paper animals. Let your imagination run wild!" she announced.
Max picked up a pair of scissors, his fingers slightly trembling. Slowly, he began cutting out the shape of a cat, his favorite animal. Sam, a boy with a mischievous grin, leaned over to see what Max was making. "That's cool! I'm making a dinosaur," he said, showing off his creation.
Mrs. Thompson picked up a book with a bright cover and sat down in the rocking chair. "Gather around, it's time for a story," she said, her voice soothing and melodic.
Max snuggled into the rug, listening intently as Mrs. Thompson began to read. The story of a brave little squirrel on an adventure captivated the children, their eyes wide with wonder.
Lily ran up to Max, her cheeks flushed with excitement. "Let's go on the swings!" she suggested, grabbing his hand.
Max felt a surge of happiness as he swung higher and higher, the wind rushing through his hair. Sam joined them, challenging Max to a race down the slide. "Bet you can't beat me!" he called out, laughing.
Max packed his backpack, a smile on his face. He had made new friends and discovered the joy of school. As the bell rang, signaling the end of his first day, he waved goodbye to Lily and Sam, his heart full of warmth.
"I can't wait to come back tomorrow," he said to his mother as they walked home, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of pink and orange.
