Max, the birthday boy, bounces excitedly by the front door, his eyes darting from the costumed animal mascots to the rows of arcade cabinets. Alex, his older brother, stands nearby with his arms crossed, scowling at the childish decor. Their parents, Mom and Dad, herd the boys through the noisy lobby, searching for an open table. "Wow! Look at the pirate bear, Mom! And the sheriff fox! Can I play the skee-ball first? Can I, can I?" "Ugh, do I really have to be here? This place is for little kids. I could be at home doing literally anything else," "Alex, it’s your brother’s birthday. Try to have a good time, okay?"
Dad pulls out chairs, and the family sits down. "Alex, would you keep an eye on your brother while he plays? Your father and I will order the food." "Fine, but if he gets lost, it’s not my fault," Max is already halfway out of his seat, eyes shining. "Alex, come on! Let’s check out the mascots! I want to meet all of them, especially the pirate bear!" "Whatever, Max. Just don’t run off, okay?"
Max darts from game to game, pumping tokens into machines and collecting tickets. He cranes his neck to spot the mascots: a hulking bunny in a tank top flexes for a crowd, a sly fox in sheriff’s gear tips his hat, a grinning raccoon in a black-and-white striped suit sneaks behind kids, a burly brown bear wearing a pirate hat brandishes a foam sword, and a beaming eagle in a pilot’s cap salutes the audience. Each mascot has its own style: the bunny’s muscles bulge beneath neon fur; the sheriff fox’s golden badge glints; the raccoon’s mask is painted over his eyes, and he carries a plastic loot bag; the pirate bear’s coat is festooned with fake gold coins; and the eagle’s blue uniform is crisp and immaculate.
Alex[/@ch_2] glances at his phone, bored. The bathroom door is tucked between two claw machines, half-hidden behind a cardboard cut-out of the sheriff fox.]
"Max, I gotta use the bathroom. Stay right here, don’t move or I swear I’ll tell Mom you ruined your own birthday," "I’ll be right here! I want to see the mascots up close!" But as soon as Alex disappears, Max creeps toward the mascots, drawn by the booming laughter of the pirate bear and the flexing bunny. He sneaks past a crowd, eyes wide with wonder.
Alex emerges from the bathroom, panic flickering in his eyes as he scans the arcade. "Max? Max! Oh no, where’d he go?" He rushes past the claw machines into the side-room, where the bunny mascot towers over him, flexing and grinning. Buff Bunzo, the bodybuilder bunny, is seven feet tall with bulging arms, a shiny pink tank top, and a carrot belt. His fur is electric blue, and sweat glistens at his temples. "Hey, little bro! You look like you could use some muscle in your life. C’mere, let me show you the secret to these guns,"
Alex[/@ch_2] to come closer, making sure no one is watching. The mirrors distort their reflections, making the scene surreal.]
"Don’t be shy, kid. You wanna see how strong a real mascot can get? Step right up—just a little closer. You gotta sniff victory if you wanna win big," "Uh, I don’t really want—" "Aw, don’t be a chicken! Here, I promise you’ll never forget this birthday," As Alex hesitates, the bunny lunges, grabbing him and pulling his face into a furry, sweat-soaked armpit. "Smell the power! Sleep tight, champ,"
Alex[/@ch_2] inside, hiding him behind the headpiece. The mascot’s eyes gleam smugly as the torso clicks shut.]
The bunny mascot stands tall, now with Alex trapped within, and strikes a ludicrous double-biceps pose: one paw flexed high, the other angled low, hips cocked, and a cocky wink to the imaginary audience. "Check out these buns of steel! Who’s ready to get pumped—birthday style?" The mirrors shimmer with the absurd reflection, as the transformed mascot struts out, ready for the next act.
