Maya, a 5-year-old girl with curly brown hair and bright green eyes, stood by the window, clutching her backpack. She watched the town come alive, her heart fluttering with excitement and nerves. Today was the day she would start school. Her mother, busy preparing breakfast, noticed her daughter's silence.
"Are you excited for your first day, Maya?"
[@ch_1]"A little,"[/@ch_1_d] Maya replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I'm also scared. What if I don't make any friends?"
After breakfast, Maya returned to her room, drawn to the mysterious book on her shelf. It was covered in sparkling stars and had the title "The Book of Courage" inscribed in golden letters. Curious, she opened it and was amazed as the pages began to glow, revealing a tiny, glowing fairy named Lumina.
"Hello, Maya!" the fairy chimed, her voice as soft as the ocean breeze. "I'm here to help you find courage and make new friends."
Maya stood at the edge of the playground, holding tightly onto Lumina's book for comfort. "Remember, a smile can be the start of a new friendship," Lumina whispered encouragingly. Taking a deep breath, Maya approached a group of children playing with a ball. "Hi, can I play with you?" she asked, her voice a mix of hope and hesitation.
Ben, a boy with sandy coloured hair and a cheeky grin, looked at Maya and nodded. "Sure! I'm Ben, and this is Sophia," he introduced. Sophia, a girl with long plaits and a friendly smile, waved. "Let's play together!" she suggested. As they played, Maya felt her nerves melt away, replaced by laughter and the warmth of new friendships.
Maya listened carefully as Ben shared a story about his pet dog and Sophia talked about how she loved drawing. Encouraged by Lumina's words, Maya decided to share her own story about finding the enchanted book and meeting Lumina. "Wow, that's amazing!" Ben exclaimed. "You're so brave!" added Sophia, making Maya beam with pride.
Maya waved goodbye to her new friends, feeling a sense of contentment she hadn't expected that morning. She held the enchanted book close, grateful for the courage it had given her. As she walked home, Maya knew that with a smile and a bit of courage, making friends was not so scary after all.
"Thank you, Lumina," she whispered, feeling the fairy's warm presence in her heart.
