Leo awoke to the familiar sound of birds chirping. Yet, today felt different. There was an unsettling feeling in his stomach as he remembered the shadows he saw last night in the attic. Mittens, his wise and fluffy companion, purred softly, sensing his unease.
"Mittens, what if the shadows come back tonight?" Leo whispered, his voice laced with worry.
"Perhaps it is time to find out what they really are," Mittens replied, his eyes twinkling with a mysterious understanding.
Leo hesitated at the foot of the attic stairs. The shadows seemed to dance mockingly at the edges of the dim light. Mittens nudged him forward with a reassuring meow.
"Remember, fear is like a shadow. It only exists when there is light to cast it," Mittens said wisely.
With a deep breath, Leo took a step forward, climbing up into the attic where the shadows awaited.
Leo followed the glow until he stood before the mirror. As he gazed into its depths, he saw not the frightening shadows, but his own reflection, looking back with courage and determination.
"The light is within me," Leo realized, his fear beginning to melt away like morning mist in the sun.
"Exactly," Mittens purred, wrapping himself around Leo's legs.
Leo smiled, feeling lighter than ever. The shadows no longer seemed threatening, but rather like old friends who had been misunderstood.
"Thank you, Mittens. I think I'm ready to face the night," Leo said, scratching his loyal cat behind the ears.
"And I will be right there with you," Mittens promised, his purrs vibrating with contentment.
As night descended, Leo lay in bed, gazing at the moonlit shadows on his walls. No longer afraid, he saw them as a canvas for his dreams and stories.
"Goodnight, Mittens," Leo whispered, drifting into a peaceful sleep.
Mittens curled up beside him, a guardian of dreams and a keeper of the light within.
