Merida clutched her mother's hand, her eyes wide as she took in the colorful surroundings of her new pre-K school. She wore a bright blue backpack, slightly too big for her small frame, and her red, curly hair bounced with each hesitant step. Merida was non-verbal, but her gaze communicated a mix of curiosity and apprehension as she faced this unfamiliar environment.
Ms. Laura, the teacher, greeted each child with a warm smile. "Welcome to our class, Merida! We're so happy to have you here," she said, kneeling to Merida's level. Merida glanced at Ms. Laura, her fingers tapping a quiet rhythm on her backpack strap.
Ms. Laura introduced the day's routine, using a large visual schedule on the wall. "First, we'll have circle time, then snack, and later, play outside," she explained, pointing to each picture. Merida focused on the images, her interest piqued by the colorful depictions of each activity.
Tommy, a boisterous boy with a friendly smile, sat next to Merida. "Hi, I'm Tommy. Do you like dinosaurs?" he asked, holding a toy dinosaur towards her. Merida didn't respond with words but reached out to touch the toy, her eyes lighting up with interest.
Ms. Laura watched as Merida explored the sandbox, her fingers running through the grains of sand. Ms. Laura approached gently, holding a set of picture cards. "Merida, would you like to play with the slide or the swings?" she asked, showing the options. Merida pointed to the swing card, her choice clear.
Ms. Laura sat with Merida at a small table, her voice gentle. "You did great today, Merida. I can't wait to see what you learn tomorrow," she encouraged. Merida offered a small smile, her eyes reflecting a newfound sense of belonging. The first day of pre-K had been a big step, but it was just the beginning of her journey.
