Mfue stands at the edge of his family’s yard, his small backpack clutched tightly in his hands. He watches as the bus engine hums and other children gather, chattering with excitement and nervous energy. The air is crisp, tinged with the scent of morning earth.
Mfue hesitates at the first step, his heart thumping loud enough for him to hear. He glances back at his mother, who waves encouragingly from the gate. With a deep breath, Mfue climbs aboard, the door closing with a friendly swoosh behind him.
Thandeka, a girl with braids and a bright smile, scoots over and pats the empty seat beside her. "You can sit here if you want. I’m Thandeka. Is this your first day?" Mfue nods, shyly taking the seat as the bus lurches forward. His hands grip his backpack, knuckles white with nerves.
"Don’t worry," Thandeka whispers, noticing Mfue’s anxious expression. "You’ll get used to it. The bus is fun—sometimes we sing songs or trade snacks. What’s your name?" "I’m Mfue," he replies quietly, feeling a little warmth spread through his chest.
Thandeka shares a piece of candy from her pocket, and soon Mfue is drawn into a game of Amina, amina kadeya ” with a group of kids across the aisle. Hesitation melts away as he joins their laughter, his initial fears forgotten. The world outside seems less intimidating with friends beside him.
Mfue stands, his heart racing for a new reason—excitement. Thandeka beams at him, swinging her backpack onto her shoulders. "Ready for school, Mfue?" "Yes, I think I am," he says, stepping off the bus into the bright morning, ready for whatever comes next.
