Mia grinned at the fluttering butterflies on her curtains, feeling a warm glow in her chest. Today was her first day of first grade, and excitement bubbled inside her like a shaken soda can. "Teddy, I think happiness feels like sunshine," she whispered, squeezing his paw.
A gentle knock sounded as her mother peeked in. "Ready for your big day, Mia?" her mother asked, setting out a favorite yellow dress. Mia nodded, heart soaring as she imagined meeting new friends and learning fun things.
Hand in hand with her mother, Mia approached the bustling school gates. Laughter and chatter filled the air, but as Mia spotted unfamiliar faces, her excitement tangled with a knot of worry. She clutched Teddy tightly, shrinking behind her mother’s skirt.
Just then, a cheerful voice rang out. Miss Rose, her teacher, knelt down. "Welcome, Mia! We’re so glad you’re here," she said, offering a welcoming smile that made the knot loosen a little.
Mia watched her classmates play, curiosity and shyness battling inside her. She noticed a boy with a lion backpack building a sandcastle alone. Gulping down her nerves, she stepped closer, Teddy in hand.
"Hi… I’m Mia," she said softly. The boy looked up, grinning. "I’m Leo. Want to help?" With a brave smile, Mia joined in, feeling a little taller as shyness melted away.
While coloring, Mia accidentally knocked her water cup, spilling it onto her drawing. Tears pricked her eyes as frustration and sadness tangled in her chest. Miss Rose hurried over, kneeling beside her.
"It’s okay to feel upset, Mia," Miss Rose soothed, handing her a tissue. "Mistakes happen. Let’s try deep breaths together," she encouraged, guiding Mia through slow inhales and exhales until the rain cloud feeling began to pass.
Mia slumped on the couch, staring glumly at the dripping window. She’d hoped to visit the park with Leo, but the weather spoiled her plans. Her father sat down beside her, offering a warm mug of cocoa.
"Sometimes days don’t go as we wish," he said gently. "But we can make new kinds of fun. Want to build a pillow fort with Teddy?" Mia nodded, her disappointment fading as they began to stack up cushions, laughter soon filling the room.

Mia tiptoed closer, curiosity buzzing. "What’s inside, Daddy?" she asked, fingers twitching with excitement. Her father winked. "Why don’t you open it and see?"
As Mia untied the ribbon and lifted the lid, she gasped—a tiny set of watercolor paints, perfect for new adventures. Her curiosity transformed into bubbling joy, and she knew every feeling brought a new discovery.
