Lucy, a curious girl with tangled hair and grass-stained jeans, races across the playground, her sneakers thudding against the mulch. She pauses at the edge of the woods, peering into the cool gloom, feeling the thrill of unseen mysteries. The shouts of other children fade as she steps closer, drawn by a giggle that doesn’t quite sound human.
Muddle, a small, round monster covered in teal fur with mismatched horns, nervously emerges, clutching a stick like a wand. Lucy gasps, her eyes wide, but instead of running, she smiles. "Hi there! Are you lost?"
"No, I like to watch the kids play," murmurs Muddle, his voice trembling but hopeful. "Would you like to play with me?"
Lucy[/@ch_1] and Muddle chase each other around a giant oak. Their laughter weaves through the air, unnoticed by the other children who are busy with their own games.]
Muddle is clumsy but quick, his furry feet tumbling through piles of leaves and startling a pair of squirrels. Lucy shows him how to climb the lowest branches, and together they invent a game of “Monster Tag.” "I’ve never had a friend before," admits Muddle, his eyes shining.
"Well, now you do. And we can make up our own monster rules," Lucy replies, her grin infectious.
Lucy[/@ch_1] calls over her best friend, Sam, a quiet boy with a love for comic books, who hesitantly follows her into the shade.]
Lucy beckons to Muddle, who shyly waves at Sam. Sam freezes, eyes wide as dinner plates. "Don’t be scared! Muddle’s nice. He just wants to play too,"
"Is he really a monster? Like the ones in the stories?" Sam whispers.
"I promise, I like stories more than scaring people," Muddle assures him.
Sam lets go of his fear, showing Muddle how to spin on the tire swing. Muddle teaches them a monster song, his deep voice rumbling playfully. "See? Monsters can be friends too," says Lucy, as the sun begins to dip behind the trees.
Muddle lingers at the edge of the woods, looking wistful but happy. Lucy and Sam wave, promising to return the next day. "Thank you for being my friends," Muddle says softly, his heart glowing brighter than ever as he disappears into the gentle twilight.
