Sawyer Brooks, a wide-eyed six-year-old, lay under his rocket ship blanket, hugging a plush dinosaur. He stared up at the ceiling, mind swirling with questions about the “fun place” his mom had promised. Was it really fun if someone else was going to brush his teeth? He pulled the covers up to his chin, whispering to his dinosaur, "What if the dentist is scarier than a T-Rex?"
Mom held Sawyer’s hand as they walked inside, the scent of bubblegum and mint filling the air. Posters of superhero teeth lined the walls, and a fish tank bubbled near the waiting chairs. Sawyer clutched his dinosaur tightly, watching a little boy leave the office waving a new toothbrush. "See? Everyone looks happy, Sawyer. I think you’re going to like it," Mom said, giving him a reassuring smile.
Mrs. Mallory, the dental hygienist, wore a pink mask and had kind, twinkling eyes. She greeted Sawyer with a gentle wave. "Hi Sawyer! I’m Mrs. Mallory. Today, I have a Superman toothbrush just for you. Do you think you’re brave enough to sit in my superhero chair?" Sawyer glanced at Mom, then nodded slowly, curiosity starting to outweigh his nerves.
Mrs. Mallory showed Sawyer the Superman toothbrush, turning it on with a soft whir. "We’re going to chase away all the sugar bugs hiding on your teeth," she explained, as she carefully brushed each tooth. The water sprayer felt tickly and cool, making Sawyer giggle. "Are the sugar bugs real? Do they look like ants?" "They’re tiny, but they can’t beat Superman. And with your help at home, they won’t stand a chance," she replied.
Mrs. Mallory explained, "This camera helps us see your super teeth up close. Ready to take some toothy pictures?" Sawyer opened his mouth wide, feeling like a movie star as the camera flashed. "Will my teeth really last forever if I brush every night?" he asked, remembering what Grandma had said. "That’s right, if you take care of them, they’ll be with you for a lifetime," she assured him.
Mrs. Summer, the other hygienist, gives Sawyer’s brother a high-five, talking about getting a tooth crown next time. Sawyer beams as Mrs. Mallory hands him a brand new toothbrush and a bag filled with floss, toothpaste, and a sticker. "This place is way cooler than I thought! I can’t wait to come back and show off my superhero teeth," he says, running to share his treasures with his brother.
