Nayer sits on the bench, her knees pulled up to her chest, watching the other girls chase each other around the merry-go-round. Her dark eyes flicker between the skipping ropes and hopscotch chalk lines, but she doesn’t move from her spot. The gentle breeze tugs at her hair and the hem of her familiar pale blue dress, but she stays still, clutching her hands in her lap.
Nayer[/@ch_1]’s mother stands near the sandbox, her face gentle but concerned as she watches her daughter sitting alone.]
Nayer’s mother walks over, her sandals softly crunching on the gravel. She kneels down beside the bench, her voice warm and encouraging.
"Nayer, sweetheart, why don’t you go play with the other girls? They look like they’re having so much fun, and I know you’d have fun too if you tried,"
Nayer looks down, brushing a fallen petal from her dress, uncertain.
Nayer shifts on the bench, glancing at her mother, then at the group of girls. Their laughter floats over, inviting but overwhelming. She fidgets with the bracelet on her wrist, her voice barely above a whisper.
"But what if they don’t want me to play? What if I don’t know how?"
Her mother smiles, giving her a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder.
Nayer[/@ch_1] watching.]
Nayer stands up slowly, smoothing her dress and taking a deep breath. Her mother gives her an encouraging nod. With hesitant steps, Nayer walks across the grass, her shoes brushing through the fallen jacaranda petals.
Nayer[/@ch_1] approaches. The air is electric with anticipation, and the sounds of the playground fade into the background.]
One of the girls steps forward, holding out a small pebble.
"Do you want to be next, Nayer? We’d love for you to join us!"
Nayer’s cheeks flush as she accepts the pebble, feeling a flutter of excitement and nervousness in her chest. She glances back at her mother, who gives her a proud smile.
Nayer[/@ch_1] hops carefully from square to square, her laughter mixing with the others. The girls cheer her on, clapping and calling her name.]
For the first time that afternoon, Nayer feels the thrill of belonging. She grins, her shyness melting away as she plays alongside her new friends, her dress fluttering and her face glowing with happiness. As the sun sets, the playground is filled with the sound of joyful voices, and Nayer knows she is no longer alone.
