Jayden sat cross-legged on the living room floor, tracing circles on the lid of a box labeled “Toys.” His mom knelt beside him, gently squeezing his shoulder, her eyes shining with a mixture of pride and sadness.
"You’re going to have a great time with your dad, Jay," she whispered, voice trembling slightly. Jayden looked up at her, swallowing hard, his seven-year-old heart torn between excitement and fear of the unknown.
Dad (Marcus), tall and broad-shouldered, unlocked the front door and grinned down at Jayden. "Let’s check out your new room, champ," he said, his voice warm but slightly nervous, as if he too was adjusting to this new chapter. Jayden clutched his favorite action figure and followed, glancing across the street at a house with bright chalk drawings on the driveway and a red bicycle toppled in the grass.
Jayden lay in bed, listening to the distant sound of laughter drifting through the open window. He sat up, pressing his face to the glass, and saw silhouettes darting in the yard across the street. "Dad, do you think the kids across the street want to play with me?" he called out, hope flickering in his voice. "I bet they do, Jay. Maybe tomorrow you can go say hi," Marcus replied, tucking him in with a reassuring smile.
Jayden clung to Marcus’s hand, his eyes wide as he took in the unfamiliar faces and the swirl of activity. "Remember, just be yourself. You’ll make friends in no time," Marcus whispered, giving his son a gentle nudge. As Jayden entered his new classroom, a boy from across the street—Eli, with curly hair and a wide, welcoming grin—waved him over to join a group building a block tower.
Eli ran up to Jayden, eyes sparkling with excitement. "You’re the new kid, right? I live right there—want to see my treehouse?" Without hesitation, Jayden nodded, a shy smile spreading across his face. The two boys dashed across the grass, their laughter blending with the evening breeze, as Marcus watched from the porch, relief and pride etched into his features.
Jayden and Eli sprawled inside, sharing stories about superheroes and favorite snacks. "It’s cool having someone new here. We can build a secret club," Eli said, grinning. "Yeah, maybe this place isn’t so scary after all," Jayden replied, his earlier fears fading as the warmth of belonging settled in his chest.
