Eli, a curious four-year-old with tousled brown hair, clutches his favorite stuffed lion, his eyes darting between the chaos and his parents. His mother kneels beside him, brushing a stray curl from his forehead.
Mom offers a gentle smile, while Dad tapes the last box closed.
"It's going to be an adventure, Eli. We'll make new memories together,"
"Will my friends remember me, Mama?"
"Always, sweetheart. And you'll find new friends, too."
Eli presses his face to the window, wide-eyed as neighbors walk dogs and children ride bicycles. The world feels vast and strange, every sound amplified in its newness.
"Here we are, champ. What do you think?"
"It's big. And blue," he whispers, shrinking behind his lion.
"Let's explore together. Maybe we'll find something special,"
Eli sets his lion on the windowsill and watches a group of kids chalking rainbows on the sidewalk. His heart pounds with nervous anticipation.
"Would you like to say hello, Eli?"
"What if they don't like me?"
"Just be yourself. You have a special light inside you," his mother reassures him, squeezing his hand.
A girl with braids and bright sneakers smiles and waves.
Maya, energetic and kind, steps forward.
"Hi! I'm Maya. Want to play superheroes with us?"
"Okay… Can my lion play too?"
"Of course! Every hero needs a sidekick," Maya beams, and the circle widens to welcome him.
When he leaps, he soars higher than before, surprising even himself.
"Wow, Eli! You jumped so far! Are you magic?"
"I think... maybe I am," Eli grins, feeling the thrill of belonging and the spark of his own courage.
Eli glances up at his parents, who watch from the porch with proud smiles. He knows now that while the city is new, his heart is brave.
"I like it here. I think my magic is making friends," he whispers to his lion, and the stars begin to wink above, as if in agreement.
