Lily clutched her backpack tightly, her fingers trembling as she stepped into the unfamiliar hallway. Her gaze darted from one group of laughing students to another, unsure where to go or whom to trust. The scent of fresh paint and the distant sound of a bell heightened her unease, making the world seem a little too big for one small girl.
Lily wandered outside, hoping for a moment of quiet, when she noticed a girl with vibrant braids and a bright smile sitting alone, sketching in a notepad. Zuli, whose eyes sparkled with kindness, looked up and offered a gentle wave. "Hi, are you new here? Want to sit with me?"
Lily hesitated, then nodded, settling beside Zuli, who slid her notepad over to share a colorful drawing of a dragon soaring above the school. "I'm Lily," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I love drawing. Do you like art or stories?" The warmth in Zuli's tone soothed some of Lily's worry.
As they unwrapped their sandwiches, Zuli animatedly described her favorite fantasy books, her hands painting scenes in the air. Lily found herself smiling, her nerves fading with each shared story. "Maybe we could draw something together after school?" she offered, hope flickering in her eyes.
Zuli introduced Lily to her group of friends, who welcomed her with cheerful greetings and eager questions. Lily felt her heart swell with relief; the unfamiliar faces gradually became friendly ones. "See? It’s not so scary with friends," Zuli whispered.
Lily walked home with a lighter step, her apprehension replaced by excitement for tomorrow. She glanced back at the school, her fears now mingled with hope and possibility. The promise of new adventures and friendships shimmered ahead, as bright and welcoming as the golden sky above.
