Nicholas sits on the edge of his bed, swinging his legs nervously. His brown hair is slightly tousled, and his big brown eyes glance uncertainly at the backpack. The cheerful chirping of birds outside feels at odds with the knot of worry in his stomach. Today is his first day of kindergarten, and he doesn’t know what to expect.
Nicholas sits at the table, barely touching his breakfast. His mom kneels beside him, gently smoothing his hair. "What if no one wants to play with me, Mommy? What if I don't like it?" His mom offers a reassuring smile, her voice soft. Mom (Nicholas’s mother, patient and warm). "Everyone feels nervous on their first day, sweetheart. I know you'll make friends, just be yourself."
Nicholas clings to his mother’s hand, his gaze darting across the playground. The swings sway gently, and laughter echoes all around. A teacher with a friendly face, Ms. Harper (Kindergarten teacher, cheerful and welcoming), kneels down to greet them. "Hello, Nicholas! We're so glad you're here today. Would you like to see our classroom?"
Nicholas lingers by the door, unsure where to go. He watches a group of kids building a tower out of blocks, longing to join in but too shy to move. Ms. Harper leans in with an encouraging smile. "Do you like building things, Nicholas? There's plenty of room at the block table."
Eli[/@ch_4] (classmate, friendly and curious), grins as he adds a block to the tower.]
"Want to help me build the tallest tower ever?" Nicholas hesitates, then nods, sliding onto the tiny chair. As he and Eli work together, their laughter blends with the lively sounds of the classroom. "I like making things super tall," he says quietly, a smile spreading across his face.
Ms. Harper claps her hands, announcing story time. Nicholas settles onto the carpet beside Eli, feeling a warmth of belonging. For the first time that morning, his worries fade. "Kindergarten isn’t so scary after all," he whispers to himself, ready for the adventure ahead.
