Lottie sat on her bed, a hint of disappointment shadowing her usually bright eyes. Her fingers traced the outlines of the Santa hat she had meticulously decorated with glitter just last week. "Why does Oilfield Santa have to come early this year, Mom?" she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and sadness. Shay, her mother, paused at the doorway, a soft smile on her face. "Because your dad, Clayton, has to work on Christmas Day, sweetheart. The rigs don't stop, even for Santa," she explained gently.
Lottie carefully placed a bow on a small gift, her focus unwavering. "Will Daddy still get to see Oilfield Santa?" she asked, glancing up at her mother. Shay chuckled softly. "Of course, honey. We'll make sure to save some cookies for him and take lots of pictures," she assured, her hands deftly tying a ribbon.
Lottie gazed at the tree, her heart fluttering with excitement despite the unusual timing. "I hope Oilfield Santa likes the cookies we made," she mused aloud, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. Shay joined her on the floor, wrapping her arm around Lottie. "He'll love them, just like he loves seeing you happy," she whispered.
Oilfield Santa stepped inside, his eyes twinkling with joy. "Ho, ho, ho! Merry early Christmas, Lottie!" he bellowed, his voice warm and hearty.
Lottie jumped up, her previous sadness forgotten as excitement took over. "Santa, you made it!" she exclaimed, running to embrace him.
Lottie, now donning her glittery Santa hat, sat beside Oilfield Santa as he listened intently to her tales of the year gone by. "You've been quite the good girl," he noted with a wink.
"I tried my best," she replied, her grin wide and genuine.
Lottie snuggled into her mother's side, her eyelids growing heavy. "Mom, I think I understand now," she murmured, her voice drowsy. Shay brushed a gentle hand through her daughter's hair. "Understand what, darling?" she asked softly. Lottie smiled, her eyes closing. "It's not about when Santa comes. It's about being together and making memories," she whispered before drifting into a peaceful sleep.
