Olivia, eight years old, sits cross-legged on her bed, tracing the outlines of gum trees in her sketchbook. Her eyes shine with excitement as she imagines herself in the wild Australian bush, surrounded by towering eucalyptus and the distant calls of cockatoos.
"One day, I’ll protect every animal in the park," she whispers, gently shading the tail of a koala in her drawing.
Every bush becomes a hiding place for imaginary wallabies, and the old tree stump transforms into a ranger station. She kneels beside a cluster of rocks, inspecting them with great seriousness.
"Tracks! Maybe a wombat passed by," she narrates in her best ranger voice, marking her findings on the map with a green crayon.
Mum, gentle and encouraging, sets a plate of food in front of Olivia. Dad, bearded and cheerful, sits beside her, glancing at the sketches peeking from Olivia’s notebook.
"Your drawings are beautiful, Olivia. You really love animals, don’t you?"
"I want to help them and take care of the bush. Maybe even teach people about it!"
"Then you’ll be a fantastic ranger one day," says Dad, ruffling her hair.
Olivia stands tall, hands on her hips, and addresses her audience with practiced authority.
"I promise to protect the forests, rivers, and all the creatures that live here. If you ever need help, just call Ranger Olivia!"
She grins, imagining the wide open spaces and the thrill of adventure waiting beyond her window.
A koala appears in the branches above, looking down with curious eyes. Olivia gently guides a lost echidna back to its burrow, her heart swelling with pride.
"Don’t worry, little one. You’re safe now," she says, feeling the power of her promise.
Her sketchbook is open at the edge of the bed, a new drawing of herself as a park ranger next to a kangaroo. She hugs it close, ready to chase her dream once more.
"One day, for real," Olivia whispers, her heart already racing toward the wild places she longs to protect.
