Katie sits huddled on her bed, her knees drawn to her chest, swaying gently to the muffled hum of the city. She glances at the door each time a distant car horn blares, her heart thumping faster. The familiar scent of lavender calms her, but the thought of venturing outside fills her with dread.
Ollie, a terrier mix with a lopsided grin and wagging tail, bounds into view, nose twitching. He pauses, sensing Katie’s uncertainty, and sits a respectful distance away, eyes warm and inviting. "Hi there, are you coming outside today?"
Katie watches Ollie with wide, cautious eyes, her fingers twisting in her hair. He lies down, chin on paws, and lets out a gentle whine. Slowly, Katie extends her hand, her breath trembling. "It's okay. You can pet me if you want," his eyes seem to say, unwavering and patient.
Katie giggles for the first time that day as Ollie rolls over, inviting a belly rub. "You're soft... and not scary at all," she whispers, her voice growing steadier. The garden, once a place of fear, now feels like a gentle adventure.
Katie hesitates, her hand trembling slightly, but Ollie nudges her leg, looking up with trusting eyes. "I'll be with you," he seems to promise, unwavering in his loyalty. Together, they take a tentative step onto the sidewalk, the world outside beginning to feel just a little bit safer.
Katie smiles, her shoulders relaxed, as Ollie trots happily beside her. The outside world is still big and unpredictable, but with Ollie's steady presence, every step feels possible. "Thank you, Ollie. For loving me just the way I am," she says softly, and Ollie responds with a joyful bark, ready for all the adventures ahead.
