Paisley Mae could hardly keep still, her curly hair bouncing as she peered out the window for the tenth time that hour. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation, and her hands clutched a small, blue dog collar she had picked out herself. The clock ticked louder than usual, each minute stretching with the promise of something wonderful.
Mom steps out first, carefully carrying the box as Paisley Mae bursts through the front door, nearly tripping over her own feet. "Is that our puppy? Is he really here?"

Paisley Mae crouches beside him, encouraging softly. "It's okay, Sunny. Stairs are scary, but I'm right here," she reassures, patting the first step. After a hesitant moment, the puppy bravely places one paw on the step, then another, finally bounding up with a triumphant bark.
