Jake sat at the kitchen table, swinging his legs excitedly as his mother poured syrup over his breakfast. The promise of a visit to the pet store shimmered in his mind, lending a sparkle to his eyes. His favorite green sneakers waited by the door, ready for their adventure. Mom smiled, sensing his anticipation.
Mom held Jake's hand as they walked through the glass doors, his eyes wide in amazement at the menagerie before him. He tugged her toward the small mammal section, where fuzzy faces peeked out from cages. The hum of chatter and the clinking of metal made the space feel alive with possibility.
Jake's gaze landed on the ferret, whose bright eyes met his with instant connection. Kneeling down, he pressed his hands against the glass, captivated by her antics as she chased a plastic ball. "Look, Mom! She's so funny. Can I hold her?" A store attendant unlocked the cage, carefully placing the ferret in Jake's arms. Her fur was silky and warm, and she sniffed his fingers curiously.
Jake giggled as the ferret climbed up his sleeve and nestled against his neck. "She likes you already," Mom said, kneeling beside him. "I want to call her Paisley," Jake whispered, gazing into her tiny, clever face. The ferret wiggled in response, as if approving her new name.
Mom handed over her card, glancing down at her son’s glowing smile. "Let's make sure we have everything she needs. Ferrets are a big responsibility," Jake replied, determination clear in his voice.
Jake watched as Paisley explored her new home, sniffing every corner and tunneling through a pile of blankets. Mom leaned in the doorway, her eyes soft with pride. "Welcome home, Paisley," Jake said, reaching a gentle hand into the cage. Paisley curled up in his arm for the first time, Jake understood what it felt like to be chosen by a friend.
