Parley woke up to the sound of roosters crowing, his heart light and eyes bright with excitement for another day on the farm. He quickly dressed and bounded down the stairs, eager to help his dad and siblings feed the animals. The crisp air filled his lungs as he dashed outside, his boots thudding softly against the wooden porch. Today felt special, though he wasn’t sure why yet.
Parley joined his mom in the kitchen, helping her knead dough and crack eggs for breakfast. He loved these moments, watching her work and sneaking tastes of sweet jam when she wasn’t looking. "Can I help stir the batter, Mom?" he asked, his hands already reaching for the wooden spoon. They worked side by side, sharing stories and smiles until the meal was ready.
The news spread fast—Parley’s dad announced that the mama goose’s eggs had hatched. Parley rushed out with his siblings, their faces lit with wonder as they peered into the nest. Among the fluffy goslings, one caught Parley’s eye—a tiny, curious creature nibbling at his shoelaces. Parley knelt down, grinning wide. "Dad, can I take care of this one? I think we’ll be good friends," he asked, hope sparkling in his voice.
Baby Nibbles nestled comfortably in Parley’s arms, peeping softly and nuzzling his fingers. Parley promised to feed, water, and care for his new friend every day. "Peep peep!" came the tiny reply, as if in agreement. From that moment, Baby Nibbles would follow Parley everywhere—through tall grass, between hay bales, and even into the vegetable garden.
Nibbles was never far from Parley’s side, their bond growing stronger each day. They swam together in the pond, diving and playing in the sun-dappled water. Parley taught Nibbles tricks, and Nibbles always tried to mimic him, flapping his wings and making Parley laugh. "You’re my best friend, Nibbles," Parley said, his voice full of joy, and Nibbles honked in reply.
Parley stroked Nibbles’ soft feathers, feeling grateful for the friendship they’d shared. He thought about all the adventures, laughter, and lessons they’d discovered together. "Pets really are the best friends a boy can have," he whispered, a gentle smile on his face as Nibbles nestled closer, content in the warm glow of their friendship.
