Pico the Parrot flapped his emerald wings excitedly, his red tail feathers shimmering in the morning light. A backpack dangled from his shoulder as he hurried along the path, chattering with his friends, Luna the Squirrel and Milo the Mouse. The air was crisp and full of laughter, but Pico’s mind darted nervously—he had forgotten to finish his homework last night.
"Did you finish your homework, Pico?" Luna asked, her bushy tail twitching as she balanced on the fence.
"Of course I did!" Pico replied quickly, forcing a wide grin. But a knot tightened in his stomach as he glanced at his empty homework folder, hoping no one would notice.
Miss Maple, her feathers flecked with silver, surveyed the class with kind but sharp eyes. Milo handed in his neatly written sheets, and Luna’s colorful drawings fluttered onto the pile. When Pico’s turn came, he hesitated, heart pounding.
"Pico, may I have your homework, please?" Miss Maple asked gently.
"I—I left my homework at home," Pico stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. "I did it, but I must have forgotten it on the kitchen table." The words tasted strange in his beak, and he avoided Miss Maple’s gaze, feeling the weight of his fib settle heavily on his feathers.
"Thank you for telling me, Pico. Please try to remember next time," Miss Maple replied, her tone gentle but disappointed. During recess, Pico sat beneath an old oak tree, watching his friends play. Guilt gnawed at him, and he realized how wrong it felt to lie—even a little.
"Luna, Milo, I need to tell you something," Pico began. "I didn’t forget my homework at home. I didn’t do it at all, and I lied about it. I’m really sorry. It’s not right to lie, and I want to be responsible from now on."
"It’s okay, Pico. We all make mistakes. What matters is that you told the truth now," Luna said, offering a friendly nuzzle.
"We can help each other remember our homework together," Milo added, smiling.
Pico felt lighter than he had all day, his feathers fluffed with relief. He promised himself to always be honest and take responsibility for his actions. With his friends by his side, Pico knew he could do better—and help others do the same.
