Dad sits on the edge of the bed, lacing his boots, while his daughter, still in her pajamas, watches him intently. She clutches a paper badge she made the night before, eyes bright with anticipation.
"Did you catch any bad guys last night, Daddy? Was it scary?"
"Not with my brave partner by my side," he says with a wink, ruffling her hair.
She slips on her homemade police cap and stands tall beside Dad. In her imagination, she’s his partner, ready to face the city’s dangers together.
"Officer, are you ready for patrol?"
"Always, Captain! Let’s keep our city safe," she replies in a serious, determined voice.
Dad[/@ch_1] regales her with tales from his night shift. Sunbeams dance across their faces, illuminating the pride in his eyes.]
He tells her about the time he helped a lost dog find its way home and how he watched over the neighborhood so everyone could sleep safely.
"We walk the quiet streets, making sure only the night wind moves. And you—you're always the bravest, keeping an eye out for any trouble."
She listens, rapt, picturing herself beside him, flashlight in hand.
She draws herself in a blue uniform, badge shining, standing next to Dad beneath a streetlamp. Around them, cartoonish “bad guys” scurry away, and stars twinkle in a painted night sky.
"Look, Daddy, that’s us! You’re helping everyone, and I’m helping you," she exclaims, holding up her masterpiece.
"I couldn’t ask for a better partner," he replies, pride warming his voice.
Dad[/@ch_1] readies himself for another night on patrol. The hallway glows softly, the scent of dinner lingering in the air.]
He kneels to hug her tightly, tucking her drawings into his pocket for luck.
"I’ll keep your city safe tonight, promise,"
"And I’ll dream I’m out there with you," she whispers, squeezing him close.
Dad[/@ch_1] steps into the cool night, his daughter’s drawing pressed over his heart.]
As he walks his beat, he smiles, knowing she’s dreaming of their adventures—her courage shining as brightly in his memories as the city lights above.
