Penda, a cheerful young child with curious eyes, wanders near the riverbank, her small hands brushing the tall grass. Suddenly, she hears a tiny trumpet sound and spots a baby elephant, gray and wrinkly, with big floppy ears hiding in the reeds. Penda kneels down and smiles, her heart fluttering with excitement.
"Hello, little elephant! Are you playing hide and seek?"
The baby elephant peeks out shyly, blinking her long eyelashes. Penda giggles, and the elephant swings her trunk, making a funny face that makes Penda laugh even more.
Penda sits beside the elephant, reaching out her hand. The elephant gently touches her fingers with her soft trunk, and they both feel safe together. They listen to the birds and watch the clouds make shapes in the sky.
"Do you want to be my friend?"
The elephant trumpets softly, circling Penda with her trunk in a gentle hug. Penda beams, knowing they have made a special promise.
Penda talks to the baby elephant, telling her about her family and her favorite games. The elephant listens, flapping her ears and sometimes bouncing on her big feet. They play together, splashing in the river and rolling in the soft mud.
"My family is far away sometimes, just like yours," Penda whispers, hugging the elephant’s wrinkly head. The elephant leans closer, as if she understands every word.
Penda notices the elephant looking sad, her eyes shining with tears. Penda sits quietly, her hand resting on the elephant’s back. She remembers the grown-ups talking about the baby elephant’s family gone away, and she feels a heavy ache in her heart.
"Sometimes I feel lonely too," Penda says softly. "But we have each other now."
Penda looks into the elephant’s big brown eyes and sees a friend who feels just like her—sometimes scared, sometimes brave, but always hoping for love. They snuggle close, sharing warmth and dreams.
"We are the same, you and me. We both need hugs, and we both need friends," Penda says, smiling softly. The elephant trumpets a happy sound, and they fall asleep together under the shining stars.
Penda and the baby elephant wake up side by side, ready to play and explore again. Their hearts are full, knowing that no matter what, they will always have each other.
"Let’s go, friend!" Penda laughs, and together they run into the bright, happy day, side by side, forever friends.
