Penda stepped off the jeep, her eyes wide with excitement as she looked around at all the new sights. She wore a pink sun hat and carried a little backpack shaped like a lion. Her parents chatted with the guide, but Penda was already dreaming of adventures.
"I can't wait to see animals up close!"
Zuri, the baby elephant, peeked out from behind a bush. Penda gasped and tiptoed closer, careful not to scare her new friend away. Zuri lifted her trunk and made a soft trumpet sound.
"Brrrrrrr! Hello!"
"Hi, elephant! My name is Penda. What's yours?"
"I'm Zuri!"

Penda and Zuri quickly became best friends. They played in the water, making big splashes that sparkled like diamonds. Penda showed Zuri how to draw shapes in the mud with a stick.
"Look, Zuri! I made a heart."
"I love hearts! Let's draw more together!"

Penda noticed that she and Zuri both loved to eat sweet fruit and roll around in the grass. They both had big, bright smiles and loved making new friends. Even though Zuri had four legs and a trunk, and Penda had two legs and two arms, inside they liked the same things.
"Penda, do you like to dance?"
"Yes! Let's dance together!"

Penda and Zuri had a picnic with fruit and cool water. They told each other stories and watched the stars twinkle above. Penda felt happy to have a new friend who liked all the same things she did.
"Zuri, I wish we could play together every day."
"Me too, Penda! Best friends forever!"
Penda[/@ch_1] hugs Zuri tight, promising to visit again.]
It was time for Penda to go back to the lodge, but she wasn’t sad. She knew she and Zuri would always be best friends, no matter how far apart they were. As she waved goodbye, Zuri trumpeted happily, and the stars seemed to twinkle just for them.
"Good night, Zuri! I'll see you soon!"
"Good night, Penda! Sweet dreams!"
