Percy the Peacock strutted and preened, his feathers spread wide, shimmering in the sunlight like a living rainbow.
"Flap-flap, swish-swish! My feathers are grand, but I wish for some shoes—oh, wouldn’t that be grand?"
He looked around at the other birds, who wore nothing at all on their feet, and let out a little sigh: "Peck-peck, tap-tap! Could there be shoes that go slap-slap?"
Percy tiptoed over, his claws clicking on the stones—clickity-clack, clickity-clack! In the middle of the pile sat a pair of bright yellow crocs, glowing like drops of sunshine.
"Oh, what are these? What a sight for sore toes! If I wore these shoes, how far could I go?"
He slipped his feet into the crocs—squish!—and wiggled his claws with delight.
Percy[/@ch_1] parades down the path, his crocs making a cheerful clomp-clomp as he walks. The other animals gather to watch, their eyes wide with wonder and giggles.]
Molly the Mouse, tiny and gray, scampered up to watch, her whiskers twitching in excitement.
"Squeak-squeak! Percy, those shoes go snap! Will you dance for us, or maybe even rap?"
"I’ll do a jig, I’ll do a twirl, with my crocs I’ll spin and whirl—clompity-clomp, clompity-clack, watch me go and don’t look back!"
The animals cheered as Percy spun, his crocs making all sorts of silly sounds: squish, slap, plop, and tap!
Percy tried to dash, but his crocs went squelch-squelch, slipping and sliding across the muddy park.
Freddy the Frog, green and grinning, croaked from a puddle nearby.
"Ribbit! Those crocs are cool, but watch your step—don’t end up in the pool!"
"Oh, splish-splash, slip and slide, these crocs are fun, but now I glide!"
Percy spun in circles, feathers flying, until—plop!—he landed softly on a mossy log.
Percy[/@ch_1], who is still giggling. The crocs are muddy but still bright, and everyone laughs together in the fresh, sparkling air.]
Molly scampered up and patted Percy’s wing.
"No matter the weather, your crocs are the best! You made us all smile and passed the test!"
"Shoes or no shoes, rain or shine, with friends like you, I’ll always feel fine!"
The animals all clapped—clap, clap, clap!—and Percy did one last happy dance in his perfect pair.
Percy looked at his crocs and then at his friends, his heart full and happy.
"Crocs that go squish, friends that go cheep—this was a day I’ll always keep!"
And as the stars twinkled above, Percy dreamed of new adventures, his crocs beside his cozy nest, ready for tomorrow’s fun.
