Fred, a ten-year-old boy with long brown hair plastered damply to his forehead, floated near the shallow end with a determined look on his face. Across from him, Timmy, his older brother, grinned and kicked water lazily as the last-to-leave-the-pool challenge stretched on. "No giving up now, Fred, because I can stay in here all day if I have to, and you know I am not losing this challenge that easily,"
Fred had already drunk a lot of water under the hot sun, and now the pressure in his bladder was becoming impossible to ignore. He bit his lip, looked at the pool edge, and remembered the rules: if he got out, he lost. "I am not quitting either, and I am definitely not getting out before you, so I will figure something out and keep going,"
The need to pee became so strong that Fred knew he had to act fast without breaking the challenge. He grabbed his water bottle, quickly chugged the rest, and used it as a private solution while staying in the pool. His cheeks burned with embarrassment, but relief loosened his tense shoulders almost at once.
Timmy was splashing around nearby, too focused on the contest to notice much beyond his own confidence. Fred screwed the cap back on and pushed the bottle aside, trying to look casual as if nothing had happened. "Okay, that worked, and I am still in the game, so I can do this and keep holding on for longer,"
Another hour passed, and Fred had to pee again. This time there was no easy answer, and he pressed his legs together under the water, trying not to think about the splashing sounds all around him. The cool pool that had once felt refreshing now made him more aware of how badly he needed the bathroom.
He tried to distract himself by swimming after Timmy, tossing a floating toy back and forth, and laughing whenever his brother made a dramatic dive. But even while playing, Fred kept squirming and shifting from foot to foot in the shallow end, his body unable to hide the strain. "Timmy, I really, really, really need to pee, and it is getting so hard to ignore that I can barely think about anything else,"
Another hour crawled by, and Fred kept whispering the same words to himself like a tiny promise. He hugged himself, bounced in place, and muttered under his breath that he could hold it and that he could not pee his pants. Every minute felt longer than the last, and his full bladder made his stomach feel tight and sore.
Timmy noticed the change now, the way his little brother could not stay still for more than a second. "You do not have to prove anything forever, Fred, and if you really need to go that badly, it is okay to stop when you are done," But Fred shook his head stubbornly, his wet hair clinging to his cheeks as he fought to stay brave. "I want to keep going, but I have honestly never had to pee this much before, and I am trying as hard as I can not to lose,"
By the third hour of holding it, Fred sat on the pool slide with both hands pressing against his bladder, trying to ease the aching pressure. His knees were drawn inward, and his face was pinched with discomfort as he stared down at the water below. "It hurts so much now, Timmy, and my bladder feels so full that I do not know how I am still holding it because I have never had to pee this badly in my whole life,"
At last Timmy decided to get out to grab some food. The moment his brother climbed onto the deck, the challenge was effectively over for Fred, and relief flashed across his face even before he moved. He scrambled out after him, shivering slightly in the evening air and doing a desperate pee dance while trying to dry himself with his towel.
Fred hurried inside, every step careful and urgent, and made it to the toilet just in time. The long, painful strain finally ended, and he let out a deep breath as all the pressure drained away. When he came back out, his whole body looked lighter, as if the evening itself had softened around him.
Timmy was waiting for him by the doorway with a plate of snacks balanced in one hand and a knowing smile on his face. "You held on for a really long time, Fred, and even if the challenge is over now, I still think you were seriously tough out there today," Fred smiled tiredly, then stepped forward and hugged his brother, glad the contest was over and even happier that he had made it through.
