Poseidon, a silvery-grey kitten with wide emerald eyes, tumbles across the quilt, chasing a blue ball of yarn. Her tiny paws patter on the wooden floor, occasionally slipping and sending her rolling into a pile of cushions. She pauses, ears perked, as a robin lands on the windowsill, its feathers shimmering in the light.
"Why do birds get to fly and I don't?" she muses aloud, her gaze fixed longingly on the sky beyond the glass.
Poseidon slips out the door, her nose twitching with excitement. She leaps at butterflies, her tail swishing like a banner behind her. Suddenly, as she bounds after a particularly bright butterfly, she feels a strange thrill—her paws don't touch the earth. Instead, she hovers, suspended above the grass.
"Oh! What's happening to me?" she squeaks, her whiskers quivering as she floats a paw's breadth above the ground.
Poseidon blinks in astonishment, then giggles as she rises higher. She twirls in midair, chasing her own shadow across the garden, her fur rippling with the wind. She darts up into the branches of an old oak tree, startling a squirrel, and peeks down at the world below.
"I can fly! Just like the birds!" she exclaims, her heart pounding with delight.
Robin, a cheerful companion with a bright red breast, chirps encouragement.
"You look like you were born for the sky, Poseidon!"
Poseidon beams, looping through the air alongside her feathered friend. Rabbits and squirrels giggle from the ground, cheering her on.
"This is the best day ever!"
Poseidon pushes herself, soaring higher and faster, spinning over the garden gate and swooping low above the pond. She tries to land on a lily pad but wobbles, nearly splashing into the water. Laughing, she steadies herself, realizing her newfound power comes with practice.
"Flying is tricky, but I'm getting better!" she says, determination flickering in her eyes.
Poseidon lands softly on the quilt by the window, her fur glowing in the sunset. She curls up, dreaming of skyward adventures and the friends she made along the way. Outside, the robin sings a lullaby, and Poseidon purrs, knowing that tomorrow she’ll soar even higher.
"I never knew the world could be so big—and so beautiful," she whispers, her eyes fluttering closed.
