Pumpkin Darrel rested in the crook of Charlie’s arms, his orange skin bright against her red woolen sweater as she tiptoed up the porch steps. The door swung open, releasing the scent of cinnamon and woodsmoke, and laughter spilled out into the cold. "Come on, Darrel! You get to join Christmas this year," she whispered, excitement sparkling in her eyes.
Charlie marched into the room, holding Pumpkin Darrel above her head. Mom, Dad, and Grandma turned to see her. "This is Darrel—the most special pumpkin from the patch," she announced proudly, placing him on the coffee table beside the plate of sugar cookies. "Well, welcome to the family, Darrel. Christmas is a time for sharing, so you’re just in time," said Dad, giving Charlie a wink.
Pumpkin Darrel felt a quiet awe as Mom poured hot cocoa and Grandma arranged bowls of popcorn. "Charlie, he is perfect," she said, patting Darrel gently. "He’s not just a pumpkin, Grandma. He’s my friend," Charlie replied, giving Darrel a reassuring smile.
"Tonight, I want to share the true meaning of Christmas," Dad began, opening to the book of Matthew. His voice was gentle and steady, recounting the story of baby Jesus born in Bethlehem, the shepherds watching their flocks, and the angels singing of peace. "Christmas is more than presents and treats. It’s about hope, love, and the gift that came to us all, our lord and savior Jesus Christ.”he continued, glancing at each family member, then at Pumpkin Darrel.
"Darrel, I picked you because you were different. You remind me that being special means being part of something bigger," Charlie whispered, her breath forming tiny clouds in the cool air. Pumpkin Darrel, though silent, glowed with gratitude, surrounded by warmth and belonging. The family’s love wrapped around him like the softest quilt.
"Darrel looks ready for Christmas now!" Mom laughed, passing around gingerbread men. The evening unfolds with stories, songs, and the gentle joy of family togetherness, each person—pumpkin included—cherishing the true meaning behind the celebration. As the night deepens, Pumpkin Darrel knows that he has found a home filled with love and wonder, where even pumpkins can be part of Christmas magic.
