Alfie, a wide-eyed three-year-old, wakes up and rubs his eyes. He scans his bed, searching for something familiar. His tiny hands pat the blanket, but his favorite stuffed grey dog, Rocky, is missing.
"Where's Rocky? Rocky, where are you?" he calls, his voice trembling with worry as he crawls out of bed.
Alfie dashes through each room, peering under tables and behind cushions. He glances hopefully at his mother as she pours juice at the kitchen counter.
"Mummy, have you seen Rocky?" he asks, his lower lip quivering. His mother kneels beside him, brushing a curl from his forehead.
Mum (gentle, caring): "Let's look together, sweetheart. Maybe Rocky went on an adventure last night!"
Alfie feels a lump rise in his throat as he hugs his knees to his chest. He recalls bedtime stories and whispered secrets shared with Rocky, the softness of the stuffed dog's fur now only a memory.
"I miss you, Rocky," he whispers, his voice barely above a sigh. The room seems quieter, as if it, too, misses Rocky.
Mum lifts a pile of towels, and something grey peeks out from beneath. She gasps in recognition, her face lighting up.
"Alfie, come quick! Look what I found hiding in the laundry!" she calls, holding up Rocky by the floppy ears.
Alfie's eyes widen, and a huge grin spreads across his face as he rushes forward.
"Rocky! I missed you so much!" he cries, hugging the stuffed dog tightly to his chest. He spins in a happy circle, whispering promises never to let Rocky out of his sight again.
Alfie yawns contentedly, his eyelids growing heavy. He gives Rocky one last squeeze, comforted by the familiar softness.
"Goodnight, Rocky. No more adventures without me," he murmurs, drifting into peaceful sleep as the moon keeps watch.
