I trudged down the sidewalk, my breath forming little clouds in the cold air. Suddenly, a tiny, scruffy dog darted from behind a garbage bin, its fur matted and brown eyes wide with desperation. It chased after me, emitting soft, pitiful whimpers that tugged at my heart. I slowed down, glancing around to see if anyone else noticed, but the other kids were lost in their own worlds.
I knelt beside the trembling creature, brushing away some dirt from its nose. Its tail wagged hesitantly, and I whispered, "Shh, it's okay. I won't leave you here." My heart thudded with worry—what if someone saw?—but I couldn't turn away. I carefully unzipped my backpack, coaxed the little dog inside, and zipped it up just enough for him to peek out.
All day, I feared a bark, a sneeze, anything that would give us away. But he was so silent, not even a whimper. When I slipped a hand inside my bag during math, I felt his tiny warmth and soft fur, and I smiled, realizing he had already become my best friend. I decided, right then, to name him Ronnie.
As soon as I reached my room, I closed the door and gently set my bag on the bed. Ronnie poked his head out, blinking at the new world around him. "Welcome home, Ronnie," I whispered, watching him sniff the air and wag his tail, already making himself at home.
I made a little bed for him from an old sweater and placed a bowl of water nearby. Every so often, I peeked inside the closet to check on him, and he would lick my fingers, his eyes shining with trust. "Don't worry, Ronnie. I'll take care of you. We'll always be together." The promise felt warm and real, echoing in the stillness.
With Ronnie close by, the loneliness that sometimes crept into my heart seemed to melt away. I knew there would be challenges ahead—questions from my parents, worries about keeping him hidden—but for now, I felt only happiness. The bond between us was already strong, built from kindness and a secret shared, and as I drifted to sleep, I whispered, "Goodnight, Ronnie. Tomorrow, we'll start our adventure together."
