Rory clutched his mother's hand tightly, eyes wide with both wonder and apprehension. "Will you stay with me all day, Mom?" he asked, looking up with a mixture of hope and fear.
Mom knelt down to Rory's level, brushing a stray curl from his forehead. "I'll be here when you finish, sweetheart. You'll have so much fun and make new friends." She gave him a reassuring smile before gently nudging him toward the entrance.
Miss Lily, the preschool teacher, greeted Rory with an enthusiastic wave. She had a warm smile and twinkling eyes that instantly put the children at ease. "Welcome, Rory! We're so excited to have you here today," she said, guiding him to a group of children playing with blocks.
Liam, a boy with a friendly grin and a shock of red hair, looked up from his tower. "Hi! Do you want to help me build a castle?" he asked, holding out a block to Rory.
Rory hesitated for a moment, then nodded, taking the block and adding it to the growing structure. Emma, a girl with curly pigtails, joined them, her giggles infectious. "Let's make it the tallest castle ever!" She declared, clapping her hands.
As the morning passed, Rory found himself laughing and chatting with Liam and Emma, the initial shyness giving way to excitement. He discovered the joy of sharing and teamwork, feeling a sense of belonging among his new friends.
Miss Lily held up a colorful book, her voice animated and engaging as she began the story of a brave little caterpillar. "Once upon a time in a lush, green garden..." Miss Lily's storytelling captivated the children, their eyes wide with wonder.
Rory leaned closer, hanging onto every word, his imagination painting vivid pictures in his mind. "I want to be like that caterpillar," he whispered to Liam, who nodded enthusiastically.
Rory ran towards his mom, arms flung wide with excitement. "Mom, I made a castle and heard a story about a caterpillar!" he exclaimed, his earlier nervousness forgotten.
Mom embraced him, her heart swelling with pride. "I'm so glad you had a great day, Rory. I'm sure tomorrow will be even better," she said, holding his hand as they made their way home.
