Sammy the Squirrel stood beneath the largest oak in the park, his bushy tail flicking with purpose. His calendar—marked with tiny acorn stickers—was pinned to the inside of his hollow. Each day, he meticulously checked off his nut-hunting goals, determined to fill his winter pantry before the leaves began to fall. "Today, backyard number three and the Rosewood garden. Efficiency is everything," he muttered, plotting his route on a crumpled map.
Benny the Squirrel, Sammy’s best friend, arrived with a playful leap, his fur ruffled and eyes gleaming with mischief. "Sammy, you’re missing the best days of summer. Why don’t you come out and play tag with
Sweat beads on Sammy’s brow as he pries an acorn from beneath a heavy stone, triumph lighting his face for a moment before he marks it on his map. Every nut is counted, weighed, and carefully stashed in his hollow. Even as laughter echoes from the playground, he stays focused, his tail twitching whenever he hears Benny’s distant calls. "Just a few more, and I’ll be ready," he reassures himself, lips pressed into a determined line.
Sammy clutches his notebook, the pages now thick with notes and checkmarks. Yet a pang of longing tugs at his heart as he watches Benny and the others tumble and laugh in the fading light. "Maybe… just for a minute," he whispers, glancing back at his hollow brimming with acorns. Then he realized he must finish his hunting and continued placing acorns in his sack. The next day his friends approached him. Freddy Frog says, " Have you heard the rumor Sammy?" "What rumor", Sammy replied. The rumor that your nuts have been stolen. Bucky Badger comes forward. "I heard that too." Benny his best friend says, "Who would do that?" Peter Porcupine staring forward chimed in must be someone who is jealous and lazy. The animals put their heads together and said it must be Chester Chipmunk he is jealous of Sammy and he is lazy. He never hunts for food and is always others for spare nuts. The animals agreed it must be Chester. Sammy was very upset. His hard work all summer seemed a faded memory. Now he had no food for winter. What would he do? He would have to start over. The animals encouraged Sammy to go talk to Chester. That is what Sammy did. He knocked on the door and Chester wide eyed said come in. Sammy immediately saw his nuts in a bowl shimmering like gold. Sammy did not get mad. He did the most unexpected thing. He hugged Chester and said , "let's be friends and I will share my acorns with you. Sammy and Chester counted out one hundred acorns. Fifty for Sammy and fifty for Chester. They would have a stash for winter. Most importantly Sammy and Chester became lifetime friends. Sammy taught Chester all his squirrel skills and Chester became a one of the best acorn detectives in the neighborhood. They made it a plan to incorporate business with pleasure and fun was also at the top of their agenda.
