Sarah stands beside her mother, clutching a faded red suitcase. Her cheeks are flushed, not just from the heat but from nerves and reluctance. The world around her feels too loud, too different, and she misses the soft snow and quiet woods of Canada.
"I just wish we could go home," she whispers, almost too quietly for anyone to hear.
Sarah hugs her pillow, blinking back tears. Her mother, Mrs. Carter, peeks in, concern etched on her face.
"Give it some time, sweetheart. Australia has its own magic,"
Suddenly, a small brown-and-white dog leaps from behind a bush, spinning in a circle and wagging its tail. To Sarah’s astonishment, the dog wears a tiny blue scarf and breaks into a clumsy dance on its hind legs.
Emilia, the dog, grins up at her, eyes twinkling. "G’day, mate! Care for a boogie?"
Sarah forgets her worries, swept up by Emilia’s antics. They practice new dance moves, Sarah teaching Emilia the “Maple Leaf Shuffle” while Emilia shows off an “Aussie Wiggle.”
"You’re the best thing I’ve found here," she cries, hugging Emilia tightly. "That’s what friends are for!"
Mrs. Carter drops the laundry basket, mouth agape. "Sarah! Dogs don’t dance… or talk!"
Sarah nervously explains, while Emilia bows with theatrical flair. "Pleasure to meet you, ma’am. I’m Emilia, your daughter’s official welcome committee!"
Mrs. Carter finally smiles, reaching down to scratch Emilia’s ears. "Well, if you’re going to be part of the family, you’d better teach me that dance,"
Sarah beams, happiness blossoming in her chest for the first time since the move. Australia feels a little more like home—and with Emilia by her side, anything seems possible.
