Lila clutches her blanket as the last rays of sunlight fade. Her room is getting darker. It's almost bedtime. Yancy, her loyal feline companion, lifts his head and blinks at her with glowing golden eyes.
Lila burrows deeper under the covers, her heart racing as she imagines monsters lurking just beyond sight. Yancy leaps lightly onto her pillow, his tail flicking with curiosity. "Yancy, do you ever get scared of the dark?"
"Purrrr-mmm," he responds, pressing his head against Lila's cheek as if to say he’s not afraid. Lila giggles, brushing her fingers through his soft fur. "I wish I could be brave like you, Yancy" she whispers.
Yancy hops off the bed and walks to the closet, his tail high. He glances over his shoulder, as if inviting Lila to follow. Lila hesitates, then slides out of bed, her bare feet cold against the wooden floor. "Are you trying to show me there's nothing to be scared of?" she asks in a small voice.
Lila takes a shaky breath and peers inside, realizing the darkness only hides things she already knows and loves. Yancy rubs against her legs, purring louder, and she feels a swell of courage. "Thank you, Yancy. Maybe the dark isn’t so scary after all," she says, her voice steadier.
Lila closes her eyes, her fear washed away by the comfort of her loyal friend. Yancy purrs a lullaby, and together they drift into sweet dreams, wrapped together in the gentle embrace of the night. The room, once a place of shadows, now feels safe and warm.
